The palace was built in 1843 when the Ottoman Empire was in decline and the sultan financed the palace with loans from foreign banks. It is huge and luxurious, with 285 rooms, 43 large salons, a 4-ton Bohemian glass chandelier, and a Bosphorus-shore façade nearly a half kilometer long. The palace was designed by Ottoman Armenian architects Karabet and Nikogos Balian for Sultan Abdulmecit. When it was finished in 1856, the imperial family moved out of medieval Topkapi Palace to live in European-style opulence.
All watch in the palace stopped at 09:05, the moment at which Atatürk, father of Turkish Republic, died in Dolmabahçe on 10 November 1938.
